How to Reset a Brother HL-L2460DW

When a Brother HL-L2460DW starts acting up, a reset is often the quickest fix. Two different resets cover two different problems. A factory reset deals with Wi-Fi trouble and strange settings. A toner count reset helps when the printer insists the cartridge needs replacing even though you can see toner left. Each takes only a few minutes.

Factory Reset: For Connection and Settings Problems

Try this first if the printer drops its connection, refuses to join your network, or behaves oddly. It wipes your custom settings and returns everything to factory defaults, so you will need to set up your Wi-Fi again afterwards.

  1. Press the Back button once. General Setup appears on the screen.

  2. Use the arrow buttons to scroll to Printer, then press OK.

  3. Keep scrolling until you reach Reset Printer, then press OK.

  4. Press the down arrow once to confirm.

  5. Wait a few seconds. When Default Settings appears, the reset is complete.

You need no tools and no computer. Once it finishes, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi and run a test print. According to the source, most connection oddities disappear after this reset, because the printer was usually holding onto a bad setting or a stuck network configuration.

If the problem comes back, check that your router’s firmware is current and that the printer sits within a reasonable range of the router. Brother’s support site also offers the latest drivers and firmware for the HL-L2460DW.

Toner Count Reset: For a False “Replace Toner” Message

This is the reset many people search for. The printer says “Replace Toner” and stops printing, yet the cartridge clearly isn’t empty. The reason is that printers count pages rather than measure the toner itself, so they can lock you out while plenty remains. Resetting the count lets you keep printing until the cartridge is genuinely empty.

Follow the order carefully:

  1. Turn the printer off.

  2. Open the front door over the toner cartridge and leave it open until the last step.

  3. Press and hold Go, then press and hold Power for about 2 seconds to switch the printer on.

  4. Release Power, but keep holding Go for another 3 seconds, then let go.

  5. The display should show Users Mode.

  6. Press Go 10 times, then pause for about 5 seconds.

  7. Press Go 5 times.

  8. Something will appear on the screen. Wait about 2 seconds, and the count is reset.

  9. Close the front door, wait a few seconds, and you’re ready to print.

Using two fingers makes holding both buttons easier. If it fails the first time, power off and try again. The most common mistakes are miscounting the presses or rushing the pause.

This method comes from a third-party repair site, not from Brother, so treat it as a user workaround.

Which Reset Should You Use?

  • Wi-Fi issues, error messages, or odd behavior: do the factory reset.

  • A “Replace Toner” message while the cartridge still has toner: do the toner count reset.

  • Pale, streaky, or blank pages: the toner is probably truly empty, so replace the cartridge.

The two fixes are not interchangeable. A factory reset won’t clear a toner message, and a toner reset won’t repair Wi-Fi problems.

Final Thoughts

Start with the factory reset for connection or settings trouble. Reach for the toner count reset when the printer is being overcautious about a cartridge that still has life in it. Doing so can stretch a cartridge further and save you money. Once prints turn faded or streaky, though, replace the cartridge.
